Fille de Cissy Houston, grande chanteuse de gospel, dont la cousine Dionne Warwick est l'interprète du tube Don't make me over, et la marraine n'est autre qu'Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston grandit dans un univers musical qui va façonner sa manière de chanter.
Née le 9 août 1963 à Newark dans le New Jersey, elle se retrouve rapidement dans la chorale de son église. A 11 ans, sa première prestation solo à l'église ne passe pas inaperçue. Sa beauté alliée à une voix exceptionnelle lui ouvrent les portes du monde professionnel. Elle devient, comme sa mère à ses débuts, la choriste de Chaka Khan, Jermaine Jackson et les Neville Brothers. Parallèlement au chant, elle tente une carrière de mannequin avec succès puisqu'elle fait la couverture des plus grands magazines de mode au début des années 1980.
En 83, Whitney Houston signe son premier contrat avec une maison de disques. Deux ans plus tard, son premier album est dans les bacs. Trois de ses titres, dont le fameux Saving All My Love For You, se classent numéro 1 au billboard américain. Du jamais vu. Plus de 23 millions de disques s'écouleront, ce qui constitue un record en son temps. S'en suivent deux années de tournée pour la jeune chanteuse. A la fin des années 80, le succès se confirme. Son second album se classe directement numéro 1 à sa sortie. En sus, elle place 7 de ses titres n°1 au Top US consécutivement, battant ainsi le record des Beatles et des Bee Gees...
Au début des années 90, Whitney est au sommet de la gloire. Elle épouse le producteur-chanteur Bobby Brown en 92 avec qui elle a une fille un an plus tard. Elle s'essaie au cinéma avec réussite. Bodyguard, dont elle signe la bande originale avec le standard I Will Always Love You, est un succès planétaire (la présence de Kevin Costner y est peut être pour quelque chose diront les mauvaises langues...). Elle délaisse pour un temps la musique pour le grand écran, avec plus ou moins de succès. D'autant plus que sa vie privée fait la une des tabloïds, entre son mari volage, la drogue et les passages par la case prison. Il faut attendre 1998 pour un nouvel album de la diva, My Love is Your Love. L'occasion d'une collaboration avec les plus grands artistes du moment comme Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliot ou Wyclef Jean. On la retrouve également en duo avec sa grande rivale Mariah Carey ou George Michael.
Mais le début des années 2000 semble marquer la déchéance de The Voice, malgré la sortie de quelques compilations de ses plus grands succès. Cures de désintoxication à répétition, incarcération pour possession de drogue, démêlés avec son mari, suspicion d'anorexie... Il faudra attendre 2006 pour que le couple se sépare. Un soulagement puisqu'elle remonte enfin la pente grâce à sa famille avec qui elle se produit occasionnellement sur scène. En mars 2007, Clive Davis, son ancien mentor annonce la sortie d'un nouvel album pour 2008. La diva black aux multiples récompenses est enfin de retour... Tremble Mariah Carey !
